Fun Activities for Grandchildren

As we enjoy these fun activities for grandchildren, we feel we are in an ideal situation, where we love to laugh and play and then let their parents make those major critical decisions about their life! In other words, we are just having fun times with them!

Fun activities for grandchildren is key to a healthy family relationship!

So when my husband and I aren’t with our grandchildren, we think about them and what fun activities we can have with them in the future. We really love being with our grandsons and feel that it is such an honor to be living close enough so that we can spend this quality time with them and their family.

Kids playing

I told my husband today that I hope as the boys get older we can take a vacation with their family and enjoy those times together. He laughed and said he hope that we can “take the boys on a trip” alone!

Our grandsons are still so young, but I look forward to the future when we can plan fun activities for grandchildren whether in our home, in the yard, a museum, library or on a cruise ship!

Basket full of Books

When my children were young, I was a school librarian and only had the summer months to enjoy the flexibility to take them to “fun and educational” activities. My husband was a military officer and traveled often. Now I hope to be able to share in events more often with the twins.

These events usually were to increase social contacts and learning activities that would be meaningful for each child.

Now to create fun activities for grandchildren, consider the following :

  • Going to the local library for story time each week
  • Libraries also have fun activities periodically including reading programs
  • Work with the Children’s Librarian to assist you in choosing age appropriate books, CD’s and DVD’s
  • Craft or art classes are usually available for preschoolers
  • Attend Church Vacation Bible School during the summer

  • Attend Museum school which may emphasize a variety of interests: dinosaurs, rocks or geological studies, reptiles, and astrology or outer space events
  • New Perot Museum in Dallas
  • Local parks or the Arboretum in Dallas where flowers are breathtaking
  • Community theatre where children's plays offer local theatrical talent
  • State Fair of Texas

Baby Playing

This past weekend, I was invited to help my daughter with learn and playtime at Gymboree.

So much fun watching small children all the same age and various developmental stages, playing together on mats, inclines and structures.

The 45 minute program is a weekly experience that includes socialization and excitement for any young child.

Other play areas include Going Bonkers which also has a Toddler Play areas for under age 3 babies. It is a fun, safe outing for your grandbabies, but be prepared, you must be active too! Loads of laughs and fun for all!

Fun activities for Grandchildren: Outdoors

When it isn’t too hot in Texas or other parts of the country, try to involve your grandkids in outdoor activities. Make sure you put mosquito repellent and smear on the suntan lotion before the grandbabies go outdoors. Also, put caps and sun shades on each child to help protect their skin while outside.

Not everyone has the option to move close to their children and grandchildren. We are truly thankful that we have had this opportunity!

Over a year ago, we considered our future! We thought, what fun activities for grandchildren that we could have if only we lived closer. We found a beautiful home about 15 minutes from our children located on an acre of land. Yes, we relocated, just for the excitement, joy and fun activities for grandchildren!

Since there is a pool just outside our back door, we must constantly be aware of the grandchildren's location when outside!

We are concerned about pool safety and are planning to have a fenced pool area before they are able to walk. Also, there were be several other safety measures put in place before they go swimming in 2013.

We loved the lot since behind this area, there is flat space for them to run and play now and eventually play soccer and other sports in the future throughout the year.

Yard Work and Play

Consider letting your grandchildren help you plant and water flowers or vegetables in the garden.

Beautiful Pink Hydranges
Delicious Vegetables

They will have a great time pulling weeds or harvesting the vegetables. Then they can eat those homegrown tomatoes, carrots, okra or beans for lunch. They may want to eat the apples or pears off the trees.

My husband planted trees to acknowledge their birth. Share with them which tree their grandfather planted. Let them water the trees when they come to visit. The grandkids may want to print out a label or paint a sign with their name to label their tree.

Make this a fun, memorable activity.

Fun activities for Grandchildren: Rainy Day Activities

Each time we babysit our twins, we realize how much fun we are having with them! Toys, toys and more toys are about their world!

Christmas Push and Riding toys

Most of our entertainment now is inside and involves anything that will make a noise from plush stuffed toys, riding toys, and excersaucers. These items are the key entertainment for a 10 month old. We also sing, dance, tickle, and laugh to keep them entertained. When we babysit, we keep the television turned off throughout the day.

We do realize that when you babysit an older child and it is raining outside, you must find interesting fun activities inside your home for 12 hours or so. You may introduce a new toy that you had hidden in the closet, electronic game or device that will immediately interest them or a new book from the library or bookstore.

Other fun activities for grandchildren that you can offer without plopping them down in front of a television or videotape for hours include:

Grandparents playing with grandchildren

  • Listen to a variety of kids songs and songs that were popular during your life
  • Sing these songs throughout the day and leave the television turned off
  • Sing those nursery rhymes that they have heard since birth. Play the CD’s that you borrowed from the library to supply the music
  • Dance along with the kids to the music…they will love your moves! This will also get them up and moving too!

Fun Activities for Grandchildren: Cooking

Nana's Pound Cake

  • Be adventurous and find a recipe that the kids would love to eat. Maybe a cookie or cake recipe. Ask Mom if it is part of their diet.
  • Teach them what ingredients go into the recipe
  • Have them help you measure out the ingredients
  • Let them help mix these ingredients and put in the oven. Can’t you just see the kids squishing flour and butter between their fingers? Yes, flour may go on the floor, but you are creating memories with your grandkids and you will have time to vacuum or sweep the floor before lunch!
  • They will be so excited to try their creation! This is called making memories!
  • Also, let them help you fix their lunch for the day. Try a new sandwich or vegetable. Anytime they can create a meal, they will be intrigued.
  • They will need to help you clean up. This will include bringing over a stool and wash the dishes at the sink, help place the pots, pans and other dishes in the dishwasher.
  • Always praise them for the great work they have completed
  • Have a sample to show Mom or Dad when they pick them up later in the day. Yes, they will be so proud of this accomplishment!
