Favorite Toy Purchases from a Grandparent who is a Librarian

Books, that Is....

Basket of Books

Favorite toy purchases recommended by grandparents and considered to be fun, creative and exciting for our grandchildren will be listed in this section.

Please list toys and books that you feel should be considered for this list!

As a Librarian, let me recommend that you always have a basket of books sitting around for the babies to look at or you to read to them just before nap time. It is such a special time for you and your grandchild to hold the book and you dramatize a reading of the latest book in the stack.

Books can be rather expensive and you don't always have to purchase these items new. You can find book bargains at garage sales, Book Fairs at the neighborhood school, annual public library book sales, etc.

Also, for a fun outing each week, there is usually a children's reading time at your local public library which will introduce your grandchild to new books. Check with the library for that special time in your area. Then after this activity, check the shelves and let your grandchild discover a new book to check out as you leave. You will find the kids love to find a book and will give them a real appreciation of books and storytime later in life.

Favorite Toy Purchases:

Toy Chest: Fisher Price

Fisher Price Toy Chest
  • Toy Box--Fisher Price: This was a $10 purchase at the latest community-wide garage sale. It was my first purchase of the day and one of my best.
  • I had been trying to store toys in boxes or large wicker baskets, but my grandsons would rather sit it the box or basket! So by having this toy box, I have been able to corral all their toys throughout the day. It also makes cleanup easier at the end of their visit.
  • If you can't find this toy box, I would recommend a wooden chest that could be kept for future use.

Favorite Toy Purchases:

Tent with tunnel

Tent with Tunnel
  • Tent with Tunnel Attachment--Pacific Play Tents: My husband purchased tents and tunnels for the boys at their home and ours for Christmas! Of course, yes, he found this on the internet and felt that he got the "deal" of the century and didn't even have to pay shipping. Of course, the boys love it! On most babysitting days, the balls remain in the tent!
  • When the boys start to wander in other areas of the room, we can just mention, "let's go to the tent" and they both will turn and head to the tent to play. The balls are just the right size for their little hands and they love to toss them and push them around inside the tent!
  • However, this tent was recommended for ages 3 and up. Although with our supervision and the fun the boys have had being in the tent, I must admit, no matter the cost, it was a great purchase for our grandsons.

Favorite Toy Purchases:

Push Toy and Stuffed Animal

Walking Toy and Stuffed Animal
  • "Rory" Walking Lion--Fisher Price: This is one of our grandson's favorite toys. They love pushing his nose and listening to his "roar" thus the nickname we have given him! I found this toy at a consignment sale just after the boys were born.
  • Laugh and Learn Learning Puppy--Fisher Price: Grandparents recommend this toy....in fact, it was liked so much, we bought two! Both our grandsons love this toy. It will sing, and laugh, as the toy tells them it loves them! This is a very comforting and happy toy....makes the boys smile each time they hug it!

Favorite Toy Purchases:

Pewi YBike
  • A Physical Therapist recommended this bike for our youngest grandson, YBike Pewi Balance Bike. Now his Grandparents recommend toys such as this bike which we have found to be extremely helpful to our youngest grandson as he begins to learn to stand up and begin to use it as a push toy. He still isn't riding it yet, but his therapist assures us that he will be in the future! Great purchase!
  • According to the YBike Pewi website: It is an innovative walking buddy and ride-on for children aged 12-36 months is designed to enhance body and space awareness. They can stand freely or sit on the unit, and safely play or ride around. Larger wheels enhance safety, and wheel covers prevent harming fingers and feet.

Near Christmas time each year, you will find various recommendations for favorite toy purchases. This year, Parenting Magazine or parenting.com has compiled a list of age appropriate and interest approved list of toys that might make your toy selecting easier. Check it out and don't peek at the gifts listed for Grandparents too...might spoil a surprise!

Riding and Pushing Toys

As you can see from the picture above, riding and push toys were the theme of our grandson's gifts this Christmas.  We purchased Little Tykes Police Cycle Sounds Rocker for ages 12-36 months.  This rocker according to the site "has sirens and various noises interacts with toddlers and rewards them with lights and sounds. Great fun for any child with motorcycle sounds and lights!"

Also, we purchased another riding toy made by Catepillar, the Cat 3-in-1 Ride on with Mega Bloks with a bonus push toy and mega bloks.   Based on the site, it is the "perfect toy for anyone who has a little construction lover! The large steering wheel and real truck sounds create an exciting ride for kids to imagine working on an important construction site. The CAT 3-in-1 Ride-On allows your little construction worker to attach the toolbox/ to the back of the truck and carry his tools around to any important construction site! The 3-in-1 Ride-On can be transformed into 3 different forms, from a car to ride in, it easily turns into a walker that can be pushed from behind, to a vehicle that can be pulled along with the tools firmly attached to the truck. Any way they want, your little construction worker can sit on it, push and pull or drag things around and play with them for fun! The 3-in-1 Ride-On is excellent for developing strength and creating endless adventures."  For ages 15 months to 3 years of age.

Little Tikes Adjust 'N Draw Table

Uncle James gave the twins this Little Tikes Adjust 'N Draw Table.   The website states "it is a multi-purpose activity table for your little one. It is ideal for eating, games, crafts and more. Your child will enjoy sitting at this adjustable drawing table with a friend and share skills. The kids drawing table provides a comfortable place for your child to sit while engaging in creative activities. It can be converted to an easel in no time to further help your child draw and paint. You can take this adjustable drawing table anywhere, as it is easy to assemble and carry."  Appropriate for ages 15 months to 5 years old.
